EDNA BIZON SWA

10 December 2003 – 10 January 2004

Inspired by the European tradition of trompe-l'oeil realism, Edna Bizon's paintings celebrate the simple pleasures of living in a manner which stimulates the imagination through its appeal to the senses.

Luscious peaches and redcurrants glow with the bloom of summer ripeness, succulent cabbages, onions and turnips burst with newly harvested freshness, crusty loaves of bread lie temptingly beside rare cheeses at the peak of perfection, intricately wrought glass goblets stand ready to receive noble wines from bottles venerably patinated with dust from the cellar. Such are the raw ingredients of Edna Bizon's remarkable still-lifes - each painting affording an opportunity to savour the endless bounty of nature and reflect upon the exquisite joys of everyday life.

Nowhere is this more apparent than in Edna Bizon's paintings of musical instruments whose beautiful shapes and mellow varnished woodwork seem to physically embody the sweetness and harmony of the music they produce.

Edna Bizon's empathy with the natural world is eloquently demonstrated in her paintings of farm animals and pets - rabbits, cattle and pigs are depicted with insight and sympathy as they play, observe, feed and nurture their young.

The fragile beauty of nature is brilliantly captured in Edna Bizon's flower paintings whose luxuriant foliage and magnificent blooms are an enduring and uplifting reminder of the intoxicating fragrances and glorious colours of summer.

In this exhibition Edna Bizon delivers a resounding clarion call to enjoy and appreciate life - expressed with a spiritual conviction and technical mastery rarely found in the work of a contemporary British artist.
